Overview
JAWS (Job Access With Speech) is a screen reader that helps individuals who are blind or have visual impairments access and navigate digital content.
JAWS converts information displayed on a computer screen into speech and can also work with refreshable Braille displays. It allows users to navigate applications, websites, documents, and other digital content using keyboard commands.
Some of the features include:
- Screen Reading – Reads text and information displayed on the screen aloud.
- Keyboard Navigation – Allows users to navigate applications and websites without relying on a mouse.
- Web Navigation – Provides tools for navigating web pages, including headings, links, forms, and other elements.
- Braille Support – Supports compatible refreshable Braille displays.
- Document Reading – Provides access to documents and other digital content.
- Navigation Commands – Provides keyboard shortcuts for efficiently navigating and interacting with digital content.
Available To
JAWS is available on Fleming College computers where the software has been installed and licensed. It is primarily intended to support students who are blind or have visual impairments.
Getting Started
- Locate and open JAWS on a Fleming College computer where it is installed.
- Start JAWS and allow the application to load.
- JAWS will begin reading information displayed on the screen.
- Use the keyboard to navigate through applications, web pages, documents, and other content.
- Use JAWS keyboard commands to move between headings, links, forms, and other elements.
- Refer to the tutorials and related resources below to learn commonly used JAWS commands and features.
