Using a Physical Security Key for MFA Authentication

Tags MFA

Overview

If you cannot use any of our preferred MFA authentication methods—i.e., an authenticator app, SMS text messages, or voice calls—then as a last resort, using a physical security key is an option. The Fleming ITS department supports two types of physical security keys:

  1. FIDO2 USB security keys - available to staff upon request or students self-provided/purchased.
  2. One-time password (OTP) fobs - available upon request to any Fleming user with no other viable MFA options.

The process for this is as follows:

FIDO2 USB Security Key

OTP (One Time Password) Fob Device

  • Request a one-time password (OTP) fob device from the ITS department by submitting a ticket here
  • No user setup is needed for an OTP device; the IT Service Desk will inform users when their fob device is ready for pick-up.
