Using a Physical Security Key for MFA Authentication

Tags MFA

Overview

If you cannot use any of our preferred MFA authentication methods—i.e., an authenticator app, SMS text messages, or voice calls—then as a last resort, using a physical security key is an option. The Fleming ITS department supports two types of physical security keys:

  1. FIDO2 USB security keys are available to students and staff.
  2. One-time password (OTP) fobs are available only to staff.

The process for this is as follows:

Students

Staff

  • Staff may purchase/provide their own FIDO2 USB security key, or request Fleming ITS department to provide one, and then follow these setup instructions: How to Set Up a Security Key for MFA.
  • Staff may request a one-time password (OTP) fob device from the ITS department by submitting a ticket using the page found here
  • No user setup is needed for an OTP fob device; staff must pick up this device from the Service Desk when ready.
